A Blog’s Target Audience

When it comes to writing guest posts for other blogs, one of the biggest and most important decisions you will have to make is pinpointing the demographic and target audience of the blog you are writing for.

Realistically you should be keeping the demographic of the blog’s readership in mind before you starting writing the article or even before you start thinking of story ideas, because understanding a blog’s target audience will not only help you with the writing process, but it will also help you come up with story ideas as well.

By failing to keep the target audience in mind, the meaning and philosophy of what you’re trying to say could get lost if the reader can’t relate to what it is you’re writing about, thus you should be putting extra thought and consideration into who the typical reader of the blog would be, and why they keep returning to the site on a regular basis.

Take, for instance, if you were writing a guest post for a comic book site. The majority of readers who visit comic book sites are usually visitors of a younger demographic, specifically males between the ages of 15 and 35. Because of this, your article should touch on something that would interest the average young male, rather than write about something that a baby boomer or even a working mom would find interesting.

However, understanding a blog’s target audience isn’t just limited to guessing the age and sex of a reader, but also understanding their goals, aspirations, dreams and interests as well.

If you’re finding it difficult to estimate the demographic of the target audience, one of the best around this is to ask the blogger directly, because the fact of the matter is any “good” blogger should know their readership like the back of their hand, especially if they truly care about building a relationship with their readers.

And last, but certainly not least, if you’re still struggling to pinpoint the demographic of the blog’s readership you could always scan through previous posts and look at the readers’ comments. Regular readers will more than likely leave their own comments, questions and concerns if they truly care about the content that is being written on the blog, and by reading their comments will not only help you understand the target audience, but come up with some great story ideas as well.
